What is coaching?

Coaching is an ongoing relationship between the coach and an individual or a team, that supports them in achieving extraordinary results in life, profession, business or organization.

It’s an interactive and creative process based on trust and transparency, and it creates a safe space for reflection, learning and growth.

In each session, the client chooses the focus, while the coach listens and contributes with observations and questions. This interaction creates clarity and accelerates the client´s progress by providing greater focus and awareness of choice.

Coaching concentrates on where clients are today and what they are willing to do to get where they want to be tomorrow.

That is to say…

Coaching is an amazing journey of self-discovery and personal growth

How coaching takes place

  • Coaching is done either face to face or by phone with email contact between sessions.
    Both systems have proven to be equally efficient.

  • There are 2 initial meetings:

    Coachee – Sponsor – Coach
    The aim is to agree on desired outcomes, measures and roles and to make a final
    commitment to proceed.

    Coachee – Coach
    The 2 hours intake session is aimed to assess the coachee’s current opportunities and
    challenges, identify priorities for action and establish specific desired outcome.
    Then the coaching alliance is jointly designed and structured to best fit the
    coachee’s needs.

  • The duration of the coaching relationship varies depending on the coachee’s needs and preferences with a minimum of 3 months. Frequency of sessions can vary from two one hour sessions to four 30 minutes sessions per month.
  • Coaching also takes place in between the sessions with actions, inquiries and constant
    learning.

The difference between coaching, consulting and training:

Coaching, consulting and training are related and sometimes overlapping at their foundation, but their focus of attention is different.

  • A professional coach's primary attention is to tap into the client's own vision, wisdom and directed action in service of the client's self-identified agenda. The client applies himself/herself to his/her whole life usually including their professional endeavours.
  • A consultant's primary attention is to achieving organizational results (often large systems change) through the application of specific expertise. They may or may not also be charged with transferring knowledge or a skill set to their client.
  • A training and development professional's primary attention is the successful transfer of specific information or skills to their clients. Again, a trainer may well use coaching skills.

The difference between coaching and therapy:

Psychotherapy generally deals with people with emotional/ behavioural problems and disruptive situations - and seeks to bring the person to normal function by focusing on dysfunction. The primary focus is on healing.

Coaching, on the other hand, deals with functional people who want to move toward higher function - and achieve excellence while creating an extraordinary life. The primary focus is on growth and manifestation of potential. And, healing is often a side effect.

Coaches hold individuals as creative and resourceful, enabling them to discover their own answers and create their own solutions.

Therapy = Why?
Coaching = Why not?
